and THEY were actually quite easy to put together even when you\u2019re mad enough to want to fully line all your winter dresses!<\/p>\n<p>So when I decided to tackle a third dress pattern from the same collection, namely <a href=\"https:\/\/voguepatterns.mccall.com\/v8997\">V8997<\/a>, I was fully confident that it would turn out as a stunning project. <strong>I was attracted to this dress by its V lines at the neck, back and waist; its princess seams at the bust<\/strong> (which I\u2019ve been wanting to tackle for ages but couldn\u2019t face a self-made FBA); <strong>and its big floating skirt<\/strong>. My plan was to sew view C (big skirt at it longest) with long sleeves, to make it a perfect winter skirt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded mx-auto d-block img-fluid aligncenter wp-image-1776 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/A8DE5163-B09A-44B5-A73C-29FD4F4CD523.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/A8DE5163-B09A-44B5-A73C-29FD4F4CD523.jpeg 514w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/A8DE5163-B09A-44B5-A73C-29FD4F4CD523-218x300.jpeg 218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I <strong>made a series of mistakes that could have been avoided<\/strong> but transformed this project into an unpleasant sewing marathon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>My first mistake was not to look at the line art in sufficient detail<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; had I done so, I would have noticed that\u00a0<strong>the dress itself has 18 pattern pieces, or 36 if you decide to fully line it!<\/strong> Not a good start! Note to myself for the future: always, ALWAYS count the number of pattern pieces before purchasing a pattern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded mx-auto d-block img-fluid aligncenter wp-image-1778 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/BD3FEA40-3B06-41FD-94D0-1D3E00071689.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"774\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The other problem I had is that the (8!!!) skirt pieces all look quite similar, so if you don\u2019t keep track of which is which, it is quite easy to put them together wrong<\/strong> &#8211; I did very well with the dress itself; but for the lining I did attach the wrong pieces together at least twice! Arrggghhhh! Adding to that my very poor quality lining, which meant a few holes and having to completely resew my lining bodice (which I had assembled the wrong way around too)&#8230; Nightmare!<\/li>\n<li>When the dress was finished and ready to hem, <strong>I realised the long skirt was definitely too long<\/strong> &#8211; in my grey fabric I looked like a nun, not that I have anything against nuns but that was definitely not the look I was planning to achieve! So I had to take 10cm off a very wide skirt circle skirt&#8230; And then hand-hem the skirt&#8230; It just took FOREVER!!!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded mx-auto d-block img-fluid aligncenter wp-image-1773 size-large\" title=\"V8917-vogue-winter-dress-swirling-big-skirt\" src=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2D33FEC6-9845-4413-A2C7-51A3D201935E-770x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2D33FEC6-9845-4413-A2C7-51A3D201935E-770x1024.jpeg 770w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2D33FEC6-9845-4413-A2C7-51A3D201935E-226x300.jpeg 226w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2D33FEC6-9845-4413-A2C7-51A3D201935E-768x1022.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2D33FEC6-9845-4413-A2C7-51A3D201935E.jpeg 863w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oh and off course <strong>I decided to add black piping at the waist after putting the dress entirely together<\/strong> (but thankfully before assembling the lining). So that meant unsewing the entire waist to insert my piping; and cutting corners at the back, not to have to unsew my invisible zipper. ARRRGGGHHHH! Second note to myself: make up your mind on the piping at the beginning of the project!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded mx-auto d-block img-fluid aligncenter wp-image-1747 size-large\" title=\"V8917-vogue-winter-dress-black-piping-detail\" src=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12E0C47E-D341-4796-9A8C-6E2D3BE6560E-769x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12E0C47E-D341-4796-9A8C-6E2D3BE6560E-769x1024.jpeg 769w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12E0C47E-D341-4796-9A8C-6E2D3BE6560E-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12E0C47E-D341-4796-9A8C-6E2D3BE6560E-768x1022.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/12E0C47E-D341-4796-9A8C-6E2D3BE6560E.jpeg 1285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded mx-auto d-block img-fluid aligncenter wp-image-1763 size-large\" title=\"V8917-vogue-winter-dress-back-view\" src=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/F6429CF8-C3AD-4410-8EE1-EA2C1EB3DC3B-769x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/F6429CF8-C3AD-4410-8EE1-EA2C1EB3DC3B-769x1024.jpeg 769w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/F6429CF8-C3AD-4410-8EE1-EA2C1EB3DC3B-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/F6429CF8-C3AD-4410-8EE1-EA2C1EB3DC3B-768x1023.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sixmignons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/F6429CF8-C3AD-4410-8EE1-EA2C1EB3DC3B.jpeg 933w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other adjustments I made were the following (after making a muslin of the bodice):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>There were two front body pieces, I merged them into one<\/strong> as I couldn\u2019t see the point of having a seam right in the middle of the dress;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the neckline and back were too low for the winter<\/strong>, so I added 3cm at the shoulder, going to 1.5cm at the center front and back;<\/li>\n<li><strong>there was a mistake in the pattern for the sleeves<\/strong> &#8211; at some point the size lines disconnect, you have to go along with the largest for your size; I got that initally wrong so the sleeves were to tight and I had to redraw them;<\/li>\n<li><strong>I turned the three-quarter sleeves into long ones<\/strong> by adding 13cm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I increased the underarm opening by 1.5cm<\/strong>, which is a common adjustment for me; I did not have to make adjustments to the sleeves to do this, just to the bodic, as the ease was sufficient to accommodate my adjustment.<\/li>\n<li>As mentionned previously, <strong>I added black piping<\/strong> at the waist and around the neckline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other than that the bust fit was absolutely perfect; the V shape at the waist is very flattering; and the skirt moves very nicely when you walk<\/strong> (justifying all the fabric used!!). The shoulders are a bit too wide so if I ever make this dress again I will have to take 1cm off there. And I think this dress needs a bit more pressing of the seams before wearing, I need to buy the proper tools for that!
